Efficient last-mile public transport

Library of Challenges

Short description: Industry and workforce hotspots are rarely near central (commuter) stations. The challenge is to implement efficient last-mile public transport in existing infrastructure without extensive construction. Autonomous shuttles are the next big thing but are they mature enough?

Market potential: Are autonomous shuttles reliable enough for predefined routes in regular city traffic? Is the investment sound over 15 years? Road vehicle better than a railway vehicle (when possible)? Logistics?

Timing: City development currently addressing challenge. Service to launch in 2025. Incorporate with new central station.

Desired result: A comprehensive analysis of best way for rapid (autonomous) point-to-point transport in Västerås. Both short and long term of interest. Both city road and railway solution possible, hybrid too.

Information on challenge owner: City/municipality.
